Aurora Expeditions' Latest Ship Is Antarctica-Specific

Aurora Expeditions, a company that specialises in polar expeditions, just announced the launch of its second expedition ship, which will be named Sylvia Earle. This ship will be a sister ship to the line's Greg Mortimer, which will debut in 2019.

An inverted bow design known as the Ulstein X-BOW is featured on the Sylvia Earle, which was developed specifically for Antarctic expeditions. This design helps to reduce fuel consumption while allowing for smoother and faster navigation through ice-class waters and waves, which is a significant benefit for travellers interested in conservation who are traversing the notoriously rough Drake Passage.1

This innovative Ulstein X-BOW hull design made its first appearance on the Greg Mortimer, but it is quickly becoming the standard for arctic and antarctic vessels. The National Geographic Explorer and the National Geographic Endurance, both operated by Lindblad Expeditions, as well as Albatros Expeditions' Ocean Victory and Vantage Cruise Line's Ocean Explorer have all made their debuts with the inverted bow.

In addition to the X-BOW, passengers on the new eight-deck Sylvia Earle will find a Citizens Science Center, which is an immersive programme that allows passengers to participate in ongoing science observations and projects guided by a Citizen Science member and the ship's expedition team while onboard, during shore excursions, or in zodiacs. This programme will be available to passengers on the new Sylvia Earle.

According to Hayley Peacock-Gower, the company's chief marketing officer, "Our goal is to immerse our expeditioners in some of the world's most distant and interesting areas and, in doing so, create lifelong ambassadors for the planet." This statement was made in reference to the company's mission. "Aurora Expeditions has a track record for pioneering adventure and discovery, and respectful travel is at the centre of our concept," says the company, which has been in business for more than 30 years.

Dr. Sylvia Earle, an esteemed marine scientist, oceanographer, and National Geographic explorer-in-residence for more than 25 years, was honoured with the naming of Aurora's newest purpose-built, climate-neutral Antarctic expedition ship. The ship is named after Dr. Sylvia Earle. The ship will also feature six public decks named after pioneering female conservationists. Some of these pioneering female conservationists include Dr. Earle and Dr. Carden Wallace AM, Joanna Ruxton, Sharon Kwok, Bernadette Demientieff, and Dr. Asha de Vos. This will be another way that the ship will celebrate women in the scientific community.

Alongside the various shore excursions that passengers go on, such as sea kayaking, snorkelling, walks and hikes, and zodiac cruises, the ship also has a dedicated lecture hall where passengers can participate in presentations and lectures about the destination. This helps to further create an educational and immersive understanding of the Antarctic environment. In addition, there is a designated mudroom on board, as well as a sea-level kayak and zodiac launch platform, which makes loading and unloading gear for excursions much simpler.

Even though Antarctica is a wild and rugged place, guests will be surrounded by creature comforts while they are on the ship. These creature comforts include multiple restaurants and bars, several observation areas and lounges, heated hot tubs, an infinity pool, and even a fitness centre and spa facilities. The accommodations are roomy, modern, and more equivalent to a hotel room than what you would anticipate to find on an expedition ship. The majority of the cabins have their own private balconies, and the suites have their own separate living rooms.

Ushuaia, Argentina will be the starting point for Sylvia Earle's first voyage to Antarctica, which will take place on December 10, 2022. The ship will have accommodation for 132 passengers.

Michael Heath, the Chief Executive Officer of Aurora, stated that "we are beyond happy to announce that our newest ship, Sylvia Earle, is in the water and on her way to Antarctica." "We cannot wait to show her to our dedicated trade and consumer partners throughout the world, as well as, of course, a new generation of global expeditioners in quest of adventure, discovery, and remarkable life-changing experiences."
