Where is the movie "Emily in Paris" shot?

2022-12-28  Diana Solomon

Season three of the guilty-pleasure fish-out-of-water romantic comedy will premiere in December 2022.

The third season of Netflix's comedy series Emily in Paris premiered on December 21, 2022, building on the popularity of its first two seasons, which were named the streamer's most-watched comedies of the year following their release.

Emily in Paris, the tale of a cheery Chicago marketing executive who joins a French firm, has always had the credentials, not the least of which is its American creator Darren Star, whose resume includes Beverly Hills 90210 and the enduring Sex and the City. It has already surpassed even those, turning Lily Collins into a celebrity and bringing to mind the stunning beauty and glitz of its other starring woman, Paris.

Although much regarding the upcoming was already under wraps, we know that Lucien Laviscount's Alfie, Emily's British love interest, will return. The frantic speed of the play suggests that Paris will once more be mine for its locations, also well-known and less traveled.

We learn more about the locations Emily and her companions travel to in Season 3, we'll update this article. In the meantime, here's our guide to the Emily in Paris filming locations used in Seasons 1 and 2 and a little bit of Season 3.

Where was Season 1 of Emily in Paris filmed?

With a blend of picturesque residential Paris and the great spectacle, EinP's inaugural season made its aims plain right away.

The charming Place de l'Estrapade in the 5th arrondissement, which has a fountain at its center, was selected by the producers as Emily's home base (though the history is less sweet since it earned its name by being the site of public floggings). All of Emily's residences, including the flat she shares with Gabriel, are located on the rue des Fossés Saint-Jacques, which runs on each side of the plaza. La Boulangerie Moderne, a bakery, is located at number 16, while Café de la Nouvelle Mairie is located at number 19. The production uses Terra Nera, an Italian family bistro at No. 18, for Gabriel's restaurant, initially called Les Deux Compères and renamed Chez Lavaux in S2. It's a typical Parisian scene, appearing too wonderful to be true yet nearly fully true, with a bookshop and shoe repair business nearby, the Panthéon and Jardin du Luxembourg (one of Emily's favorite spots) within walking distance. The same is true of Emily's employer, the agency Savoir, which is located in the first arrondissement's place de Valois close to the Louvre the firm's preferred after-work destination, the Bistro Valois.

As for the show, we see Emily visiting the opera at the storied Palais Garnier, the majestic memorial to Napoleon III's opulent rule in the late 19th century, complete with aging French nobles and marble and gilded architecture (not to mention the famous phantom who lived in the cellars). In episode four, she tries to set up a business dinner at one of Paris's most illustrious and historically significant eateries, Le Grand Véfour on rue du Beaujolais. This restaurant opened in 1784. The original Napoleon, Victor Hugo, and Jean Cocteau all ate here. It still has two Michelin stars and some of the most impressive mirrors in the city.

She may also be seen on the Pont Alexandre III in Episode 3, a flamboyantly ornate Beaux-Arts bridge that views down to the golden dome of Les Invalides and up to the Champs-Elysées. The bridge and another Emily destination, the Musée des Arts Forains, the funfair museum on avenue des Terroirs de France on the south-eastern fringes, which we encounter in Episode 7, were included in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris.

The Monnaie de Paris, which was shown in Episode 10, has an additional history. The French mint is this massive neoclassical building from the 18th century on the banks of the Seine, but here the façade serves as the location for a fashion show with 250 extras and a lot of neon costumes. A visit to L'Atelier des Lumières on rue Saint-Maur on the 11th, one of Paris' more recent art galleries, is also included in Episode 5. This stunning digital exhibition space, which was inaugurated in 2018 in a disused foundry, is where works of art are brought to life in immersive form, as we witness with Emily's visit to a Van Gogh display.

She leaves the city in Episode 8 to visit the Loire Valley and Camille's family house, which is purportedly in the Champagne area, setting the model for Emily's trip to the Riviera in Season 2. Le Château de Sonnay outside of Tours, which is around 175 miles southwest of Paris, was used for this production. Sonnay, an attractive rural estate, is currently widely renowned for producing wine, but its presence on the program may potentially be much more well-known.

Where was Season 2 of Emily in Paris filmed?

When Season 2 started, Emily was getting ready for new adventures in Paris while avoiding her best friend Camille because her contract had been extended rather reluctantly. Meanwhile, showrunner Darren Star reassured us that we wouldn't be subjected to the same tired tropes that turned off some viewers the first time around. "She's going to be more of a part of the fabric of the environment she's living in, more of a resident of the city," he said in an interview with Oprah Daily. There were also several places, even though the venerable Le Monde daily said that the neighborhood's residents were getting impatient with filming (headline: "They think they've purchased the neighborhood").

The major news was Emily's departure from the nation's capital and her daughter's trip to the Riviera for Episode 2. They stay at the Grand Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, the Four Seasons up the coast, after arriving at Villefranche-sur-Mer station. Filming took place during the French lockdown, giving the filmmakers complete access to the hotel. A shot in the vein of the Hawaii lockdown hit The White Lotus took place at the rooftop Club Dauphin pool. According to Darren Star, "We took over what is undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous sites in the world." Except for us, the motel was completely deserted. It was strange since we had our writers' space in a villa on the grounds.

We also see them at St Tropez, on the harbor amid the yachts and in front of restaurant Sénéquier, and in Grasse, where they drop in on a party at "Ragazzi House," truly the Château Diter, a sumptuous Italianate house that is now available to rent.

Lily Collins plays Emily in episode 202 of Emily in Paris.

We received a similar quick tour of Paris landmarks for the remainder of the season. In Episode 4, Emily and her coworker Luc picnic in the Cimetière Père Lachaise beside Honoré de Balzac's grave after seeing Jules et Jim at the Le Champo theater on Rue des Écoles. She sees the renowned department store La Samaritaine on Rue de la Monnaie in the same episode, and in Episode 7, Gabriel brings her shopping in the Marché d'Aligre on the 12th (a disguised Marché Bastille).

Emily also visits the city's eateries and pubs. With her English love interest Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), whom she meets in French class, she drinks a pint at the pub The Bombardier on place du Panthéon and meets him at the diner Breakfast in America 2 on rue Malher. In Episode 10, she finally manages to get him to meet her at La Coupole, a famous Art Deco brasserie on boulevard du Montparnasse.

As Sylvie, Philippine Leroy Beaulieu Bruno Gouery as Luc and Samuel Arnold as Julien Emily played by Lily Collins in episode 206 of…

In Episode 1, we see Camille at Le Café Marly on rue du Rivoli. In Episode 5, they meet at Tortuga, the Julien Sebbag restaurant on the rooftop of Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann on rue de la Chaussée d'Antin, which has a stunning view of the Palais Garnier. While everything is going on, Sylvie, her employer, continues her culinary romance with her new beau Erik at Brasserie Lutetia on Boulevard Raspail and later at La Société in St. Germain des Prés.

Mindy, a musician and Emily's friend, moves the performance to a different setting. Although the inside scenes were filmed at Roxie, a different club on rue de Ponthieu near the Champs-Elysées, she performs in Episode 1 at La Nouvelle Eve on rue Pierre Fontaine in Pigalle to the north. Although interiors were once again recorded at a different location, this time at the Shang Palace restaurant at the Shangri-La Hotel on the 16th, Mindy's show is set in Episode 10 at the riverbank restaurant Huatian Chinagora in Alfortville, in the suburbs to the south-east.

The fashion shows that Emily produces for fashion designer Grégory brings the season to a successful conclusion. It was shot in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palais de Versailles, which was built in 1678 and has a ceiling with a fresco about Louis XIV, who made the Palais his court. This is a return to the grand settings of the first season. But as the season ends, Emily is back in Paris, contemplating some significant choices while standing on the Pont Neuf, the city's oldest bridge.

Where was Season 3 of Emily in Paris filmed?

Emily still is torn between two jobs and two boyfriends as Season 3 begins. While Emily's relationship with Londoner Alfie strains due to her connection with Gabriel, her employers Madeline and Sylvie approach with employment offers. However, despite Alfie's relocation to London, the production doesn't transport us there; rather, it stays firmly planted in Paris.

The first episode of the season takes place at the Eiffel Tower, where Emily is in a contemplative frame of mind. Later in the episode, it is shown that she is eating at Le Jules Verne, a Michelin-starred restaurant located on the tower's second level. Most of the eating this season happens at Gabriel's Chez Lavaux, but we go back to Le Grand Véfour, which we saw in Season 1. This time, Emily's colleagues meet there without her, and Emily and Luc meet at Le Flore en l'Ile on Quai d'Orléans for a drink with a view of Notre Dame Cathedral. This time, the moment for foodies takes place when Emily and the crew travel to Provence for a significant sportscar launch. At "L'Esprit de Lubéron," which is the Clover Gordes, a part of the Airelles Gordes hotel in the Provençal hamlet of Gordes, she and Gabriel have a romantic dinner for two. You may eat here while admiring the breathtaking views of the Lubéron valley and enjoy cuisine made by renowned chef Jean-François Piège that highlights regional ingredients.

We also get some of the city's fanciest hotels in Season 3. In episode three, Emily has a meeting with her American employer Madeline in a suite at the George V, an Art Deco icon that has long set the standard for opulence. We notice the gilded monument of Joan of Arc in the square in front of the hotel in the confusing establishing shot for her entrance to La Régina in rue de Rivoli, another beautiful hotel. In episode five, when Emily learns that she has made the cover of a magazine and is on "La Liste" of the most powerful individuals in Paris, we also see her outside La Régina. The same episode shows her at Le Molitor, where she encounters Mindy poolside. This hotel on rue Nungesser in the 16th arrondissement initially opened in 1929 as swimming baths. Since its 2014 refurbishment, it has become an elite hangout. Sylvie and M. DeLeon are shown meeting in Le Meurice, a different five-star hotel on the rue de Rivoli, in Episode 8.

The parks of Paris are also well-represented, beginning in Episode 1 when Emily and Alfie are shown enjoying ice cream while taking a stroll in the formal Jardin du Palais-Royal, which is near the Louvre, in the evening. The pair are seen picnicking in Episode 4 in the Parc des Buttes Chaumont in the northeastern part of the city, where the lake and the clifftop Temple de la Sibylle, built in the Roman style, showcase Paris at its most traditional charming. In contrast, the pair's other outdoor destination, La Roue, the enormous Ferris wheel in the Jardin des Tuileries, which is also depicted in Episode 4, is more contemporary.

The blending of the ancient and new is continued with trips to some of the most iconic and cutting-edge sites in the city. In Episode 4, Emily broadcasts herself to the beautiful Montmartre church known as Sacré-Coeur. In Episode 9, she makes a comeback. Gabriel and Camille visit the Musée d'Orsay, built in a former train station on rue de Lille, and Le Mur des Je t'aime (The I Love You Wall) in Square Jehan Rictus in Montmartre, a mural of enamelled lava made by artist Claire Kito and calligrapher Fédéric Baron. The Opéra Garnier, one of Season 1's prominent locales, is visited again in Episode 9 with Sylvie.

We're in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs at the Pavilion de Marsan, a division of the Louvre that specializes in everything domestic from furniture and interior design to toys, for Episode 2's retrospective of designer Pierre Cadault. Contrastingly, Mindy is living at a vintage cabaret club called La Trompette Bleue, which was filmed at La Nouvelle Eve, a venerable establishment on Rue Pierre Fontaine in Montmartre. Then, in Episode 7, Emily and Gabriel discover a new world when they impromptu go to Pop Air, a very immersive event held by La Grande Halle de la Villette in the city's northeast.

The excursions outside of the city this season are shorter than the lengthy journey Emily took to the Riviera in Season 2. Episode 6 features a trip to Provence, while Episode 9 features Emily and Alfie on a balloon flight while being recorded in the Loire Valley with the Château de Montpoupon in Céré-la-ancient Ronde's towers in the background. Then, in the season's final episode, the group does depart from Paris for a party at Camille's family house, which is purportedly in the Champagne area, to resolve the season's cliffhanger. Production took place at Le Château de Sonnay, a rural chateau around 175 miles southwest of Paris, once more outside of Tours. Here, the show dramatically picks up, leaving viewers with a lot to look forward to in the already-announced Season 4.

Netflix will begin airing Season 3 of Emily in Paris on December 21, 2022.
