Five TikTok health trends to be aware of in 2023

Welcome to WellnessTok, where you can learn about the wellness trends sweeping TikTok, such as gua sha tools, mindful journaling, and digital detoxes.

There is a noticeable vibe shift in our community as we begin the new year, and it is manifesting in wellness in many areas. The consequences of COVID-19, lockdowns and elevated stress completely altered how many of us prioritize our physical and emotional health. So now the issue is, how do we go about doing that? To help us live our best lives in the daily whirlwind of viral material, TikTok has evolved into a nexus of routines and hacks. But does this usually work out well? Which one of these ought we to attempt first? Here are our wellness predictions for the year, as seen on TikTok, along with suggestions for how to apply them to your everyday activities.

Ancient health techniques are quite popular nowadays.

TikTok has dominated the world of collum busing for the past few years (the discovery of something that has existed for ages). But finally, it appears that TikTokers are now honoring the origins of some of these antiquated rituals they use as "hacks," such as face rolling, which was inspired by the traditional Chinese medicinal technique of gua sha.

With 4.6 million views on the internet, ancient wellness covers practically every type of indigenous treatment method imaginable. But why are we searching the past for solutions? It's a strange blending of two worlds, one that moves quickly and is algorithm-based and the other that is much slower and more attentive. Perhaps finding our way back to ourselves via communal, old wisdom is the only way we can find equilibrium in this chaotic world.

Yet it's also true that western science is much more interested in giving ancient rituals a feeling of validity than in dismissing them as woo-woo. Use turmeric as an example. Several scientific research has demonstrated its anti-inflammatory effects, but it has a long history of usage in Indian ayurvedic medicine for wound healing. Moreover, a growing number of clinical research have discovered advantages for reducing stress in the Indian ayurvedic herb Ashwagandha (also popular on the 'Tok), with one finding suggesting it may also help with sleep.

The answer is, as usual, engaging in traditional wellness methods through respectable businesses and practitioners. Ashwagandha from Viridian is harvested in Rajasthan in a way that does as much damage as possible to the local environment. Sandra Lanshin Chiu, an acupuncturist, herbalist, and authority in traditional Chinese medicine, has excellent and useful online courses and gua sha tools.

The next CBD is set to emerge from mushrooms.

Although you may detest mushrooms on pizza, think of them as the popular CBD replacement as the new wellness buzzword for 2023. Functional mushrooms are becoming more prevalent in wellness and cosmetics stores, and TikTok's wellness lovers are praising the advantages of mushrooms like the antioxidant-rich Chaga (92.8 million views) and the energizing reishi (954.6 million views.)

Similar to the already stated ancient health trend, the discovery of mushrooms (also known as the "shroom boom") is not a recent development in the field of western wellness. Reishi is mentioned as far back as the Han era in China when mushrooms played a significant role in traditional Chinese medicine. Yet contemporary wellness companies are giving mushrooms a millennial makeover, such as Dirtea, which comes in sleek, Instagram-worthy packaging, and Four Sigmatic's powder sachets with mushrooms that can be added to smoothies in the morning. Even in 2020, the Duchess of Sussex invested Clevr, a coffee brand based on mushrooms. And while some skincare brands, like Origins, have been on the mushroom bandwagon for a long time (they work with well-known functional medicine practitioner Dr. Andrew Weil), many other skincare brands, like REN, Drunk Elephant, Paula's Choice, and Youth To The People, are now using mushroom-derived ingredients in their products as well.

Additional studies will indeed be conducted on useful mushrooms, and a plethora of products will probably follow in the next years. Yet TikTok's users don't need statistics or research since they have already been persuaded of the advantages of a mushroom.

Getting off of technology kind of

Our batteries are depleting rapidly, much as in the original Nokia 402. Ironically, talking about a #digitaldetox on social media has garnered 49.9 million views, proving that the hashtag's goal is now top-of-mind for 2023.

It may be partially attributed to the rising incidence of burnout, which is defined as a condition of physical and mental weariness brought on by persistent stress. According to the Global Workplace Burnout Survey, there was a 29.6% rise in burnout from 2020 to 2022 among the 3,273 workers surveyed. A potential result of the pandemic, money issues, environmental concerns, and the housing crisis (do we need to go on...?)

Live in a remote cabin

How then can you digitally detach when our technology controls so much of our lives, including our health routines via fitness trackers and meditation apps? One option may be to reserve a tech-free vacation; more and more "detox breaks" are designed to assist you in doing that. Although cabin-holiday provider Unplugged offers wooded cottages close to London and Manchester that are intended to let you power down, Villa Stephanie in Baden-Baden has a specific button that switches off all the Wi-Fi and electricity to provide you true tranquility (your phone is locked away for three days ). In the meanwhile, the following two books may encourage you to take a break and reevaluate: Burnout: Perform the inner effort to break the cycle of tension and take it in. Make the greatest darn life you can.

The trick is to find your fitness community.

Social media solo exercises are a thing of the past since community-based fitness is expected to be a significant trend in 2023. Having a gym crew has become a draw for getting your burn on, and more gyms and fitness studios host social events or create chat rooms for their patrons to connect.

Team exercise

It appears that solitary exercises are no longer popular on TikTok. People are sharing more activities that include groups and, it would seem, are just having more fun while working out (Gym Friends has 87.4 million views and is a pretty heart-warming view.) What is the cause of this change? Perhaps it's because individuals exercised in such a unique way during the pandemic—often by themselves or at home while watching a screen and boredom crept in as a result. Perhaps it's also the realization that social engagement within a group can increase endorphins and perhaps improve mental health.

Also, having a fitness group may help with accountability as studies have shown that people who exercise regularly in a community are significantly more likely to remain with it. If all of that is too much for you, you can keep yourself accountable by pairing your fitness app or gadget with a friend (Apple Watch supports buddying up). Instead, if you enjoy working alone but still need responsibility, consider hiring a wellness or health coach, which is a growing trend. Having someone present might make a huge impact no matter what you decide.

Journaling

Use a paper diary to record everything

The simple existence is reminiscent of the days when there were only four TV stations and we wrote letters. But it's clear from TikTok's 504 million views that streamlining our lives, in general, will be quite popular in 2023. Why is this happening, exactly? Perhaps we are losing some of the simplicity that some people enjoyed during the epidemic when life moved more slowly and there was more time for domestic activities like baking bread. And the opportunity to pause, reflect and record everything.

While journaling has long been a wellness community tradition, TikTok's record-breaking 4.3 billion views show how widely accepted and popular it has grown. Gratitude notebooks and the perennially popular bullet diaries are two examples of wellness writing fads. There isn't a right or wrong way to accomplish it, though. But, if the thought of having a blank page to complete concerns you, there are an expanding number of specialized wellness journals made to assist you in the process. The Positive Planner features a range of diaries that let you keep track of your thoughts, health routines, and much more, while MindJournal is designed for guys (but they'd benefit anybody), and both have science-backed workouts and mood monitors.
