Glass-bottom kayaking and riding a floating tiki bar are both available within the only all-inclusive resort in the Florida Keys (Video)

We had just stopped playing biodegradable golf off the dock as we sat in a row of turquoise Adirondack chairs overlooking Florida Bay with chilled glasses of white wine when a large mama manatee swam right up with two calves in tow, looking to snack on some seagrass. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime Keys experiences.
The trip's grand finale, the slow departure of the marine mammals, was the most exciting moment we had experienced since arriving at the Bungalows Key Largo, but we were okay with that. Key Largo is a destination for serious relaxation, not seeking thrills.

all-inclusive resort

And since Bungalows Key Largo is the only all-inclusive resort in the Florida Keys and an adults-only hotel, it may be the simplest place to relax on an archipelago that seems to have developed on this planet just to remind us to unwind.

You won't want to leave the 12-acre Bungalows property once you get there, which is about an hour's drive south of Miami. There is virtually no pressure, which is one benefit that attracts many vacationers to all-inclusive destinations. There is no need to look for things to do, make judgments (like whether to paddle board or kayak or order a rum runner or margarita), bring cash, or isolate yourself when you feel like eating a second meal. You are free to be the finest version of yourself while on vacation.

Beach House

The Beach House, the main structure housing the resort's fine dining restaurant, Bogie & Bacall's, living room lounge, and Hemingway Bar, was destroyed by an early-morning fire in May 2019, just a few months after it first opened. The Bungalows Key Largo formally reopened for business in December. There is little sign of struggle along the palm tree-lined paths, although rebuilding in such a short amount of time was not an easy task. On the contrary, the orderly rows of identical bungalows, each with two turquoise chairs on its front porch and matching bicycles parked next to it, have a calming impact on the brain that is reminiscent of a Marie Kondo movie.

Bungalows Key Largo

You'll be as content as a manatee grazing on seagrass at dusk if you combine a massage at the Zen Garden Spa with a beach yoga session and a ride on a floating tiki bar.

If a tropical all-inclusive vacation is on your bucket list for 2020, here's how to achieve it at the Bungalows Key Largo without needing a passport.

Bungalows Key Largo is where?

inclusive resort-1

A car ride from Miami International Airport to Key Largo, an island in the upper Florida Keys, takes roughly an hour. The Overseas Highway connects it to Florida's mainland as the northernmost key (a continuation of U.S. Highway 1). Driving south across the remaining Florida Keys to Key West would take roughly two hours from the resort.

The Bungalows are also accessible by seaplane from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport for visitors. The resort is located on Florida Bay and offers boat access to Everglades National Park.

An all-inclusive resort is called Bungalows Key Largo.

  • The only all-inclusive resort in the Florida Keys is Bungalows Key Largo. It's a resort for adults only.
  • What is included in the rate is as follows:
  • two to four guests can stay in a seaside or garden bungalow.

  • bicycle usage

How do the rooms look?

front porch

31 of the 135 bungalows are waterfront. Except for the 25 double queen bungalows, which sleep four people, every bungalow between 900 and 1,100 feet square may accommodate two guests.

One king or two queen beds, a sitting area with a couch, an indoor bathroom with a shower, and a private patio with an outdoor soaking tub, shower, and seating are all included in the bungalows. They also have a front porch with Adirondack chairs.

Lots of white and other neutral colors, together with accents of turquoise, make up the airy, beachy design. Outside each bungalow, two bicycles can be borrowed by visitors for the duration of their stay.

What food options are available?

At Bungalows Key Largo, there are three restaurants, each with distinctive menu items and settings. This is not your standard all-inclusive resort with a buffet as the only meal option.

Try the artisanal pizzas for lunch or dinner at the Mediterranean-inspired, resort-casual Fish Tales, which also offers a Bloody Mary and mimosa bar for brunch (go for fresh pasta, meats, and seafood).

An expertly curated wine list, five courses that change each night, and a cocktail welcome are all part of the fine dining experience at chic Bogie & Bacall's. Make a reservation when checking in to guarantee a seat at this busy restaurant.

With your toes in the sand for a lovely lunch spot during the day, Sea Senior is even more enchanted at night with string lights. It offers locally sourced fish that has a Mexican flair.

You won't ever be without a snack because it is available beside the pools, in the living room, and at the Sunset Tiki Bar.

What can be done on the property?

Although you can wander around the resort grounds, biking around is more enjoyable. Golf cart pickups are also available if needed. Visitors to the property have access to kayaks (normal and glass-bottom, for a view), paddle boards, water trikes (a serious workout), and snorkeling equipment along the waterfront.

On-site amenities include two swimming pools, a tiki gym, a spa featuring a Himalayan salt room and a eucalyptus sauna, a cornhole playing area, and a boutique. Yoga sessions, catamaran day trips to Everglades National Park, as well as sunset cruises, scuba diving excursions, and tiki boats are all available to guests. (Trust me, the only improvement above a tiki bar is a floating tiki bar.)
