Nashville's Ideal Three-Day Weekend

2022-11-04  Maliyah Mah

America is being discovered by Travel + Leisure one three-day weekend at a time. Here is what to do while visiting the music capital of Tennessee.

Nashville

A lovely fusion of a city and the American heartland, Nashville, the talented Southern city on Tennessee's Cumberland River, is a popular tourist destination. Even if you don't believe you enjoy country music, this soulful city will change your mind with its attractions, delectable cuisine, and vibrant nightlife.

First day

Nashville is a great place to go on a road trip because of its central location, but if you fly into Nashville International Airport, go downtown to the city core. You can get to your first destination by foot from accommodations in the Gulch including Music City Loft and 404 Hotel. There are several ways to get around Nashville, including taxis, ride-sharing services, and a free downtown Joyride shuttle, but there is also no shortage of parking if you hire a vehicle. At Puckett's Grocery, start the day. The restaurant serves breakfast till 11 a.m. and has been open since the 1950s. The ham steak and eggs with red-eye gravy should be ordered.

After filling up, proceed two blocks down Fifth to Ryman Auditorium, the most well-known former location of the Grand Ole Opry. In the modest structure, which was once constructed as a church, you may immerse yourself in more than 100 years of American musical history. Take a left in the direction of Broadway once your indoctrination is over. The lavender Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, which has an alley connection to the Ryman and frequently accommodates Ryman performers following their performances, should be your first destination. Spend the afternoon exploring Honky Tonk row, stopping at every stage to listen to the best singers, fiddlers, and local talent from Fifth Avenue to the seaside.

Make a reservation for dinner at Husk, located just south of downtown, where chef Sean Brock serves up inventive bites like fried chicken skin and wonderful ways with produce.

2nd day

Start your day off early by heading out on Highway 100 for Loveless Cafe’s famous fried chicken and biscuits. The trip is worthwhile, and breakfast is available all day.

After that, proceed into the city for a walking tour to the capitol along the waterway. Begin at Riverfront Station and proceed past Nissan Stadium and Riverfront Park down First Avenue to Woodland Street. Then turn left and head toward the Tennessee State Museum, which is close by. It is open to the public and filled with relics dating from the earliest settlers to Native Americans, including stone tools. Then proceed with your walking tour of Tennessee's state capital by heading north along Capitol Mall from Victory Park. You will eventually arrive at Germantown, which is now home to some of the best bars and eateries in the city.

City House in Germantown opens at five, so get there early to enjoy their delicious wood-fired pizza with pig belly and their creative cocktails, such as the "Kevin."

The Bluebird Cafe, located outside of town in Green Hills, is your final destination for the day. Even though it only has 90 seats, you could occasionally run into celebrities like Keith Urban or LeAnn Rimes there. This songwriter's venue has made stars out of people like Garth Brooks and is highlighted on the television program Nashville. Make a reservation for the nine o'clock seating at least a week in advance, and get ready to be taught once more by some of America's greatest composers.

Later, go to 404 Kitchen for a bourbon tasting (particularly if that's where you are staying).

A third day

Nashville's unique hot chicken is a must-try while visiting Music City, and there are a few excellent options. For instance, Hattie B's, a relatively new establishment, is praised for its Midtown location and spacious, airy interior. However, Prince's Hot Chicken, the tried-and-true originator, is the only one who can introduce you to the whole world of cayenne fried chicken bliss. So get in your car and go to the northern part of the city; aim to get there before midday to avoid the crowds. Each quarter is served with white bread and a pickle; feel free to start with the mild.

Remain in town and register for the Historic RCA Studio B tour at the Country Music Hall of Fame. You'll tour the legendary RCA Studio B, where artists like Carrie Underwood record unique performances and Elvis Presley recorded over 200 songs. You may explore record companies, radio stations, live music venues, and the center of the American music scene by strolling down 16th and 17th Avenues sometimes referred to as Music Square East and Music Square West. For casual live music of various genres and draught beer, visit Tin Roof; for specialty cocktails and upscale bar snacks like shrimp corn dogs, go upstairs to Patterson House.
