This resort will restore your trust in the hospitality industry, and its name is the St. Regis Punta Mita.

Resort-2

  • Service that is both intuitive and compassionate provided by the employees; outstanding attention to detail around the resort.
  • Every morning, butlers will provide coffee and pastries, and cleaning will service the room twice each day.
  • dining selections of the highest caliber, particularly at Carolina and Altamira Cantina Gourmet.

If you've been waiting to book your stay at The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort because of the extensive refurbishment project that's been going on for the past few years, the wait is almost over. After the completion of the initial phase of the massive renovation, the resort will have some newly renovated guest rooms and suites, in addition to additional dining options and a family pool complex.

TPG was present as the first phase of the makeover was coming to a close, and they witnessed firsthand the reasons why this resort will once more assume its position as a jewel in the St. Regis portfolio.

The resort's oceanfront villas and certain guest rooms, the Altamira lobby bar (which serves delicious Mexican food), the Las Marietas restaurant, bar, and pool, as well as the resort's outdoor wedding areas, have all been renovated thus far.

The second phase of the makeover will start in May and will consist of modernizing the remainder of the resort's guest rooms and suites, in addition to the Remede Spa and the Beach Club.

This enormous endeavor takes place at a time when the St. Regis brand is growing in popularity across the world. The St. Regis Kanai Resort, located in Riviera Maya, Mexico, recently opened its doors to guests, and construction on The St. Regis Los Cabos is currently underway. In the Caribbean, new resorts are scheduled to open in the year 2024 in the countries of Aruba and the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana). However, the following are some reasons why you should consider maintaining your high regard for the St. Regis Punta Mita.

THE POINTS GUY-33
Snapshot

The St. Regis Punta Mita resort is located in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico, on a beachfront peninsula that overlooks the Bahia de Banderas. The resort is situated on 22 acres of outstanding real estate. It first opened its doors in 2008 and featured 89 guest rooms and 39 suites. The thoughtful architecture of the casitas, along with the verdant vegetation, creates highly private lodgings within an oasis-like resort complex. The resort complex features three pools, a large beach, five restaurants, a Remede Spa, a fitness center, two golf courses built by Jack Nicklaus, tennis courts, and other amenities.

The majority of us picture something similar to this when we think of a "luxury beachfront escape." It is a huge resort with several swimming pools, restaurants, bars, and other entertainment options in addition to a spa. However, even though there are numerous seating areas and winding walkways across the property, it never feels crowded because everyone has their own space to relax in. The hammocks that were hung between palm trees on the green lawn in between the pool for adults only and the beach were our particular favorite amenities.

I was under the impression that The St. Regis Punta Mita would be a popular destination for romantic holidays among couples, however, there were quite a few families there with young children. In addition, the staff did a wonderful job of catering to their needs, providing services such as setting up shady cabanas or umbrella-protected hideaways at the beach and pools. The La Tortuga Children's Club was also a well-liked destination for children aged 5 to 12, thanks to the regular schedule of events and games it offered.

Although the resort is a component of the Punta Mita luxury real estate development, it is completely cut off from the rest of the community; to discover the other areas of the development, you will need to exit the resort gates. If you feel like venturing off the property for a bit, the town of Punta de Mita is only a quick drive or bike ride away and features a variety of eateries in addition to a selection of activities.

Why you're going to like staying at The St. Regis Punta Mita

THE POINTS GUY1-26
The St. Regis Punta Mita has been a favorite among Marriott Bonvoy elite members, families, foodies, and golfers ever since it first opened its doors.

The following are some of the reasons why you will also enjoy your visit.

Members of the crew who are friendly and attentive to every aspect

During the epidemic, many hotels reduced services such as daily housekeeping and turndown service, and many hotels have continued to de-emphasize those services – as dissatisfied tourists have reported back from vacations throughout the world in subsequent months. During the pandemic, many hotels cut back on services such as daily housekeeping and turndown service.
On the other hand, when we arrived at The St. Regis Punta Mita, we were promptly reminded of what we had been lacking up until that point. There are no shortcuts taken here. There were butlers located throughout the resort, and housekeeping always appeared to know when we had left our room and precisely refreshed it for those periods when they were aware of our absence.
THE POINTS GUY2-18
As soon as we stepped foot inside any of the resort's bars, we were greeted by kind faces and offered assistance. No matter if it was a casual lunch or an elaborate tasting menu with several courses, the timing of the meals was impeccable. The wait staff was not only personable and engaging, but also possessed an impressive mastery of the menus and were able to answer any questions that we had regarding the dishes that the chefs had prepared.

Almost at every turn, we were treated to exceptional service that exemplified the qualities of a good hospitality experience, which are genuineness, friendliness, and efficacy. Every member of the staff, from our butler (at this St. Regis resort, each room and suite is provided with a butler) and housekeepers to the restaurant hostesses and waiters as well as the pool and beach attendants, did an excellent job of taking care of us.

Gourmet food that is well worth the journey.

THE POINTS GUY3-15
At The St. Regis Punta Mita, you will be in for a treat if you are fussy about the culinary experiences you have and consider yourself a foodie. It was better than we could have imagined in every regard.

An unforgettable adventure could be had at Carolina, the hotel's fine dining establishment, where Angel Figueroa, chef de cuisine, was in charge of the kitchen. Even though we first didn't give the AAA Five Diamond distinction very much credence, it is, in reality, well deserved. One of the most memorable dinners we've had in quite some time was the 10-course tasting menu at this restaurant. It was approximately 170 dollars per person, with an additional 145 dollars for wine pairings. The cost of the four-course meal for one person was $115.

A lunch at Carolina is the best option you have if you want to experience the flavors that are typical of Mexico. The idea behind the chef's concept is to take the flavors and traditional ingredients from each state in Mexico and utilize them as a foundation to create something that goes above what is often available to order at upscale Mexican restaurants. He or she will do this by using each state's signature ingredients.

Each item surprised me with its unique flavor combinations, and except for the sun-dried crickets, I was left wanting more after eating most of the courses. I was aback by the fact that the kampachi and orange tostada were two of my favorites. I'm not usually a fan of raw fish, but the combination of the different textures and flavors, along with the flower petals that were used as accents, really did it for me.

The sope made with masa and featuring earthy onion tastes served atop a sauce made from roasted pumpkin seeds, and topped with cotija cheese was another one of the dish's highlights.

Last but not least, if you have a passion for lobster, you are going to adore the charcoal-grilled lobster tail that is served over a bed of plantain puree. The lobsters found in this region are sweeter and smaller than the ones found in Maine, and the beautiful sensitive morsels are a testament to this.

Both the inside dining room and the outdoor terrace at the restaurant exude an air of refined sophistication, with the latter boasting breathtaking vistas of the surrounding resort and the ocean.

Our waiter was fantastic, and he led us through the entire eating experience with skill and precision. He was extremely knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu, the cuisine of Mexico, and how a new generation of chefs is breaking new ground to create innovative cuisine. The evening turned out to be both entertaining and enlightening thanks to his observations.

THE POINTS GUY4-12
In addition, we had a wonderful time at Altamira Cantina Gourmet, the lobby bar and restaurant that had outside seating in the style of a lounge and a view of the resort and the ocean.
THE POINTS GUY5-8
Chef José Meza has created a delectable meal that is based on classic dishes and features contemporary twists thanks to the use of fresh ingredients sourced from all across the country.

To begin the meal, we had guacamole that was freshly cooked to order, served with tortilla chips and pork rinds. The serving was great, but it was way too large for just the two of us to finish.

We also attempted the sope with suckling pig and grilled octopus, even though it turned out to be one of the more difficult menu items for us to split. My dining companion chose a meal of short ribs and red chili for their main course, while I went for the suckling pig taco because the pork was so deliciously tender that I ended up eating it as my main course.

In a manner analogous to that which we encountered at Carolina, the waiter that we had at Altamira was outstanding, providing recommendations that were spot-on and ensuring that the pace of the dinner was just right. The price range for meals is $34 to $60, with appetizers starting at about $25.
THE POINTS GUY6-7
Even though we were unable to save any room for dessert after our main meals, Altamira's menu includes offerings such as triple chocolate cake, flan, and churros.

Last but not least, I highly recommend beginning or concluding your lunch with a beverage at the lobby bar. It has a comprehensive cocktail menu that also features mocktails. The Charrito, which included lychee, lime, and Earl Grey tea, was my personal favorite. During the nighttime hours, the ambiance at the lobby bar and on the outdoor patio was really lovely. The balcony was subtly lit up in a way that accentuated the reflecting pool wonderfully. The reflecting pool goes down to the adults-only pool and beach. It was the place where couples congregated in the evening, although families and groups appeared to prefer the Sea Breeze lounge, which was located close to the Beach Club pool and featured large-screen televisions playing sporting contests.
THE POINTS GUY7-6
Each morning, guests were treated to a delicious breakfast at Sea Breeze, which was provided from 7 in the morning until twelve and included a wide variety of alternatives for those who did not have any dietary concerns.

At the Sea Breeze Restaurant, you can choose to buy your food a la carte, but the vast majority of customers I observed went for the buffet instead. All of the items were excellent, and there was a sufficient quantity for those who did not have any dietary requirements. In addition to that, there was a little table there with gluten-free snacks. The buffet has a per-person cost of approximately $65 but is free for Marriott Platinum and Titanium elite members (with one exception; for further information, read the section titled "What you might not love" below).

If you prefer not to eat from the buffet, you can order items such as fruit, oatmeal, avocado toast, or a la carte items such as French toast, pancakes, waffles, omelets, and eggs Benedict. There is also a selection of heartier entrees, including grilled rib-eye, burritos, and enchiladas, among others.

A fruit plate, three different types of pastries or toast, plus your choice of coffee, tea, or juice are included in a continental breakfast that costs approximately $18.

When you sit outdoors at Sea Breeze, there is also sometimes a trained falcon on duty to dissuade small birds from dive-bombing your plate in an attempt to steal food. If you choose to sit outside, you will see the falcon.

THE POINTS GUY8-4
Proximity to charming Punta de Mita

We had a great day exploring the neighboring town of Punta de Mita, which we were able to do by leaving the resort. When it comes to dining out or doing a little bit of shopping, travelers have more options available to them thanks to the proximity. On the way there, we used the hotel car, which only cost a few dollars per journey, and on the way back, we flagged down local taxis. (There is a cab station on Avenida El Anclote, which is where a large number of restaurants can be found.)

Our go-to dining establishment was known as Lobster Paradise. The wait staff was outstanding and provided recommendations that were spot-on for our group. The restaurant has a beautiful view, which is especially breathtaking after sunset.

Related: before going to Mexico, there are eleven things you should be aware of.

Outstanding value for your points, particularly if your suite night upgrade becomes available.
During months with lower occupancy, such as October and November, the base rate for entry-level rooms, which have a garden view and either one king bed or two queen beds and measure 600 square feet, is approximately $784 per night. During the winter months, when people from the Northeast and Midwest are looking for warm-weather escapes, the starting price for the same category is closer to $1,000.

I made my reservation for a five-night visit in December and back in August. A room with a view of the garden would cost me $925 a night, which would add up to a total of $4,625 for my stay if taxes and fees were included.

Alternatively, I could redeem my points for four nights and get the fifth night free following the award bonus provided by Marriott Bonvoy. There is a range of 80,000 to 126,000 points required for each night of redemption. It appears that you can get the best deals on available awards in the spring and early fall.

I selected the second choice, and as a result, I was required to redeem 384,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to cover the cost of the stay. According to the valuations provided by TPG, each of those points is worth 0.84 cents, which comes to $3,226 when multiplied by the number of points I spent. I was able to make a value-savings of around 1,399 dollars by paying using points.

Since our visit was so close to the December holidays, the redemptions were somewhat expensive. Because this was the only time that worked for both of our schedules, I do not regret it. On the other hand, if you are planning to book at the higher end of the points spectrum, you might want to hold off on making your reservation until after the restoration is finished so that you can enjoy the entire resort experience.

By making purchases using a credit card bearing the Marriott brand, such as the ones listed below, it is simple to accumulate Marriott Bonvoy points.

  • After making transactions totaling $3,000 during the first three months after opening your account for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card, you will be eligible to earn three free night awards, each of which is worth up to 50,000 points, for a total value of up to 150,000 points. Following the anniversary of your account, you will also receive a free night reward with a value of up to 35,000 points. If you want to increase the value of this award, you can use an extra 15,000 points from your account. Certain hotels charge guests a resort fee. The cost for one year is $95.
  • With the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card, you can earn 30,000 bonus points after making transactions totaling $1,000 during the first three months after opening your account. There is no annual charge.
  • You can earn 95,000 bonus points with the Marriott Bonvoy BrilliantTM American Express® Card after making transactions totaling $5,000 within the first three months of having the card. After your card's anniversary, you will be eligible for a free night award worth up to 85,000 points. You can add 15,000 points to your account to increase the value of this gift. The annual fee for this card is a hefty $650 (for more information, see the rates and fees section), but it does come with a lot of other benefits.

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points or American Express Membership Rewards points to your Marriott Bonvoy account at a ratio of 1:1. This is an alternative to adding another credit card to your wallet and can be done if you do not choose to do so.

There are methods to make a cash booking and still gain some great additional bonuses, even if you do not have Marriott points or elite status. Both the Fine Hotels + Resorts program offered by American Express and Skylark provides the opportunity to receive a room upgrade (provided that there is availability when the guest checks in), complimentary breakfast for two, a property credit, late checkout, and additional perks.

The hotel's guest rooms and suites

Because we did not stay in a recently refurbished room or suite, I do not have any photographs of such accommodations to share with you. However, initial feedback from guests who were able to stay in renovated accommodations was positive. However, several people were disappointed that the new decor did not appear to promote Mexican arts and crafts to the same extent as the previous one did.

Because it included an outdoor balcony, the room we were staying in was not only rather spacious but also quite comfortable to use. It had a king-size bed, a comfy armchair and ottoman, and a huge marble bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers. The design was simple, and it had typical tiled floors and a ceiling with exposed beams.

The products provided in the accommodation are from the brand Laboratoire Remede and comprise shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, and bar soap. In addition, there was a bottle of mouthwash, as well as several other items, such as a nail file, toothbrush, makeup remover pads, cotton balls, and cotton swabs.

The housekeeping service was excellent, coming in twice a day and stocking the room with bottles of water and chocolate wafers in the evenings. The Terry slippers were a wonderful addition, which I made use of while going out onto the balcony because they were so comfortable.

THE POINTS GUY9-3
We had originally reserved a room with a view of the garden, but we were later informed that we had been upgraded to one with a view of the ocean instead. Perhaps it was the case when the resort was first established, but in the intervening time, the surrounding vegetation has matured to the point where there is no longer a view of the water from this location. We didn't think it was a huge deal because we believed we were getting a room with a garden view anyhow, but if this is what a premium ocean-view room looks like, I would have been disappointed.
THE POINTS GUY10-2
Additional features and pursuits available at The St. Regis Punta Mita
THE POINTS GUY11-2
The St. Regis Punta Mita has a firm grasp on the overall situation, yet at the same time, it has paid careful attention to the tiniest of details.

Things like in-room treat deliveries (we received chocolate-covered strawberries upon arrival and macarons and chocolate on the evening before leaving) were excellent examples of surprise and delight at their finest. And there were plenty of tasty delights available for free all across the resort, such as bloody mary shots in front of Sea Breeze Restaurant at various times of the day.

THE POINTS GUY12-2
These tiny things made our stay feel even more memorable, from the weekly Champagne sabering routine to the renowned Friday night beach BBQ at Mita Mary Boat Bar & Bistro to the complementary munchies sent to your pool or beach lounge chair.

Other thoughtful additions, such as hammocks placed on the lawn with a view of the ocean, were also appreciated by guests. This was especially true for guests staying in rooms that did not have a view of the water and desired a comfortable area to unwind away from the beach.

There are free bikes available for use, as well as guided tours of the Punta Mita town, and there is a clinic for anyone who wants to learn how to handle a stand-up paddleboard. All of these activities are included in the activity schedule.

THE POINTS GUY13-2
There is also a program where newborn turtles are released into the wild, which is a lot of fun regardless of whether or not you are traveling with children. Keeping in mind the importance of quality time spent together as a family, the La Tortuga Children's Club provides several different activities, both for the children and for their parents.

We did not make reservations for any spa services; however, we did take a look at the facilities, and the environment was serene and peaceful. You can make appointments for the typical kinds of treatments here, such as facials, manicures, and massages. An intriguing menu of "Touchless Experiences" was also available, which included a 45-minute chakra sound balancing treatment as well as a 30-minute zero-gravity massage, "which positions your body to make you feel weightless, stress-free, and energized by elevating your feet to be at the same level as your heart."

The fitness facility was available every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and featured several different pieces of exercise equipment, including treadmills, elliptical machines, exercise bikes, free weights, weight machines, and equipment for strength training.

The Pacifico Course is 7,014 yards long and has a par of 72, while the Bahia Course is 7,035 yards long and also has a par of 72. Golfers should like both of these courses, which were designed by Jack Nicklaus.

The following is what makes the Pacifico course stand apart from the rest: The opening shot on a "one-of-a-kind par 3" must be played from an onshore tee box to an island green that is 194 yards away on a natural rock formation in the Pacific Ocean. When the tide is low, a stone path that was previously underwater becomes accessible to pedestrians. It's almost like a hidden section of the curriculum here.

Views of Bahia de Banderas and a portion of the coast may be seen from the Bahia course.

Why it's possible that you don't love The St. Regis Punta Mita Hotel and Resort

Luxury resorts, villas, and condominiums may all be found within Punta Mita's exclusive gated enclave. Because of the complex's isolated location, there is not nearly as much to do after dark here as there is in Puerto Vallarta itself, and the airport is further away. This may be exactly what you've been looking for... but it also might not be.

We appreciated being tucked away in a quiet region with plenty of space for unwinding, even though the airport was just a forty-five-minute drive away.

The journey back to the city from the airport

The majority of travelers arrive at Punta Mita via the Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR), which is located in Puerto Vallarta. You will also have the option to rent a car, make arrangements for a car service, or take a taxi from that location. You might try to hail an Uber, however, because Punta Mita is a gated tourist complex, this option may be difficult to implement.

Travelers who had gone to Punta Mita previously informed me that the journey there is 25 miles long and takes place on a "good stretch of highway." Because there were so many speed bumps along the route, the first quarter of an hour of the drive was a little bit bumpy for me. It should take roughly forty-five minutes if there is no traffic. If you are going to be there for more than a couple of days, the ride won't be as big of an issue. If, on the other hand, you are only going to be in town for a short weekend trip, you should probably choose a hotel that is located in Puerto Vallarta so that you may avoid having to use the shuttle.

I made my reservation for round-trip car transfers with the hotel itself. From the airport to the resort, the cost was 2,670 pesos, which is equivalent to around $147, and the cost to return was 2,100 pesos, which is approximately $116. It would have saved me a few bucks if I had booked elsewhere, but I preferred the convenience of having the hotel concierge take care of booking activities like this on my behalf.

It will cost you between 1,600 and 2,000 pesos ($88 and $110) for a cab ride, but you should be aware that not all taxis have air conditioning.

Prices for renting a car fluctuate depending on the time of year; however, when I searched for my travel dates in December, I was able to rent a Nissan X-Trail for 4,700 pesos ($259) for the entire week.

Take into consideration that the lounge options at PVR consist solely of three unimpressive VIP Lounge spots for your travel back home. Even if they are included in Priority Pass Select, it is not recommended to get to the airport too early to make use of them.

The continuing refurbishment and expansion

THE POINTS GUY14-2
May marks the beginning of the resort's second phase of refurbishment, which is expected to last for the better part of the summer. This will comprise the renovation of several extra guest rooms and suites, in addition to the spa and the beach club.

The resort was forthcoming with its visitors regarding its development and kept them informed when certain services were temporarily unavailable. Nevertheless, if you are worried about it, you should contact the resort in advance to make sure that the aspects of the stay that are important to you are operational and available to guests.

While we were there, construction was taking place, but it did not feel overly disruptive to us. When we were on our balcony during the day, we were able to hear some noise; but, because we were so far away, the sounds were muffled. To tell you the truth, the barking dog in the adjacent casita was far more annoying. Even though I am an avid dog lover, I did send a text to our butler asking if there was anything that could be done about it, and they did something about it. (Although this is a dog-friendly resort, and we did see quite a few canines while we were there, visitors are not permitted to keep their pets alone in their rooms for the very same reason.)

We weren't bothered by the loudness, but because there was work going on nearby, some of the walking trails were blocked off, which meant that we couldn't always take the path that was the shortest distance between places A and B. As the resort moves on to the next phase of its restoration, I believe that this will become less of an issue shortly.

Not being able to receive Suite Night Upgrades

I paid for my stay with points, but in addition to that, I applied a Marriott Suite Night Award voucher that I had to the reservation. However, as a result of the refurbishment, a significant number of the resort's suites were rendered inoperable, so it did not clear. At the time that I checked in, suites were still showing up as bookable on the Marriott app for the days that I was staying there. This was a frustrating and puzzling discovery.

At check-in, I inquired about it and was told that there were no suites available, but that they would look into it the following day and see what they could do. Even after bringing it up with my butler, I did not receive a response from the front desk on this issue. This was the one instance where the service fell short. My recommendation to the front desk is that you should not guarantee a guest that you would check on something unless you intend to do so. It is considered rude not to do so.

It's possible that having a butler is unneeded.

One of the distinguishing features of a St. Regis hotel is its butler service. Every accommodation in the Punta Mita complex has a butler who is in charge of handling any demands, no matter how big or how small. The butler is at your beck and calls to provide services such as getting coffee in the morning, making dinner reservations, and arranging for activities that take place beyond the property.

People who value their independence and prefer to make their arrangements may find that the butler is not necessary nor comfortable in their situation. The wonderful thing about the butlers at St. Regis is that they will follow your instructions and provide either as much or as little touch as you would like.

If you are staying with a large party or have extensive requests (i.e., you haven't done any planning or scheduled any activities before your trip), your butler will save the day with spot-on recommendations and the ability to arrange things to do on the property as well as things to do on the rest of the peninsula. This is especially helpful in situations when you haven't done any preparation or booked any activities before your trip.

Because I am a planner and because our stay was only going to be a few days, I made reservations for everything that we desired in advance. We aren't the type of people who would take advantage of the butler's offer to unpack our luggage, but it was nice to have someone there to answer questions and serve us coffee on our balcony in the morning before we headed out for the day when we sent a text message request.

A supplement fee is required from Marriott Bonvoy elite members to enjoy the complete breakfast buffet.

THE POINTS GUY15-2
Because so many Marriott Platinum and Titanium elite members I met at the resort noted this to me, I felt compelled to post it here even if it is nitpicking.

If you want to augment your meal with hot things like made-to-order tacos, quesadillas, empanadas, and chilaquiles, there is a per-person extra that you have to pay for. The breakfast that is served at the Sea Breeze Restaurant is excellent, and while elite members get the cold buffet for free, there is a charge for the hot items. We chose to pay the premium, and we feel that it was money well spent; nonetheless, we find it odd that the brand's most elite members are not exempt from paying it.

Accessibility

THE POINTS GUY17-1
Beach resorts often provide difficulties in terms of accessibility. On the other hand, the layout of The St. Regis Punta Mita has been carefully considered, as seen by the presence of accessible entrances to the pool, spa, gym, business center, and meeting rooms. There are stairs leading up to several of the casitas, so if you have a preference for one that does not have any steps or only a few, make sure to let the hotel know when you make your reservation.

Walking is made simple around the resort thanks to the presence of accessible walkways, but visitors also have the option of utilizing the resort's complimentary golf cart service. During our stay, the procedure was swift and handled effectively.

In the guest rooms, you'll find door handles in the manner of levers, lowered vanities and roll-in showers that are accessible to wheelchair users, shower wands with adjustable heights, bathtub guard rails, lowered deadbolts on guest room doors, and alarm clock phone triggers. The doorways are also quite broad, and the interiors of the bedrooms offer plenty of space for wheelchairs, walkers, and rollators.

My father was in a wheelchair, and although we often went on vacation together, I'm not sure that I would have brought him here. However, if you use a wheelchair but can transition to a golf cart without any difficulty, you shouldn't have any problems getting around.
