The top ten art galleries in the USA

Some of the most technologically advanced art institutions and some of the most renowned pieces of art are found in the United States. Every artistic era and media, from Leonardo da Vinci to Roy Lichtenstein, are represented in museums across the nation.

The list below, which includes museums from New York City to Los Angeles and everywhere in between, was created using data from a Ranker poll of the most popular art museums in the United States. Although this is a solid beginning, there are several additional deserving art museums in the United States.

 

 

Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which borders Central Park in New York City, is the biggest museum in the country and has a permanent collection of more than two million items drawn from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The Museum is constantly growing, and in March 2016 it converted its Whitney space into the new Met Breuer, a separate museum of the Met that showcases only the finest examples of modern art.

Must-See Works of Art: The Egyptian Collection, which includes the ancient 15 B.C. temple, the Temple of Dendur. The entire collection of Vermeer works. Chanel, Laurent, and Balenciaga couture creations.

 

Museum of Fine Arts Boston

The largest museum in the country is the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, which houses more than 450,000 pieces of art. The American Art, Egyptian Art, and on-going #techstyle exhibit, which showcases fashion in the age of sci-fi technology, are its most well-known collections. The MFA's Japanese art collection (the Edward S. Morse Collection) includes America's largest collection of Japanese art and pottery outside of Japan thanks to Boston's twinning with the city of Nagoya. a fervent music lover? Don't forget to look at the gallery, which features 1,100 musical instruments dating back to the Middle Ages. The gallery also features daily performances.

Must-See Works of Art: Paul Revere's portrait by John Singleton Copley (left). Copley's "Watson and the Shark," Gilbert Stuart's picture of George Washington, and pieces by Gauguin, Cézanne, and Monet are also significant.

 

Philadelphia Museum of Art

In addition to its recent acquisitions of significant paintings by Cezanne, Manet, DuChamp, and Marisso, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has one of the biggest collections of American artworks in the United States. The crowded museum is home to more than 220,000 items, including delicate Persian and Turkish rugs, and one of the most popular Rodin sculpture collections in the world. The museum provides a wide variety of intriguing art exhibits for young art enthusiasts or fashionistas, from its fashion-heavy Creative Africa display to play installations by Joseph Kosuth.

Must-See Works of Art include the Creative Africa show, the AMOR sculpture on the museum stairs, Paul Cezanne's Monte Sainte-Victoire, and Edouard Manet's Basket of Fruit. Additionally, one of the most prestigious private collections in the nation is now accessible to the public at this museum: the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Collection of Private Art.

 

National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art is the country's main repository for fine art, and it was founded in 1937. In Washington, DC, the museum is located on the National Mall. The buildings west and east of the museum are separate. The museum's American and European Collections are housed in the former, specifically the Kress Collection, which has a large number of Italian artifacts, while the latter houses primarily modern art and special exhibition space. (Note: The Smithsonian Institution does not have authority over the National Gallery of Art.)

Museum of Modern Art

In addition to housing a sizable collection of Modernist artwork, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Midtown Manhattan also hosts brief exhibitions exhibiting international collections against a striking white abstract backdrop. The MoMA's walls are covered with some of the most well-known paintings from the 20th century by artists like Van Gogh, Rousseau, Pollock, and Picasso.

Visitor advice at the MoMA: Keep in mind that on Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m., entrance is free (expect crowds). One of the Michelin-starred restaurants in New York City is The Modern, which is solely accessible to visitors of the museum. Reservations are not accepted at The Modern.

Must-See Art: Seeing Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" in person is an amazing experience. Henri Rousseau's "The Sleeping Gypsy," Jackson Pollock's "Number 31," Jasper Johns' "Flag," Andy Warhol's "Campbell Soup Cans," and Gustav Klimt's "Adele Bloch Bauer II" are a few other must-see pieces.

 

Cleveland Museum of Art

Want to stroll around an art gallery while visiting Ohio? Look no further than the Cleveland Museum of Art, a bustling 45,000-piece museum that houses works by Matisse, Goya, Van Gogh, and other renowned painters in galleries that are more spacious and less crowded than those at the Met or MoMA. The museum is the only American museum to own a surviving Gothic table fountain and offers artwork for all ages, including old Tibetan works and kid-friendly art models. The museum is pushing the envelope this year for its Centennial Celebration by showcasing the most Albert Oehlen artwork ever displayed in the US.

Must-See Works of Art include the Parisian Gothic Table Fountain, which dates from 1320 to 1940; paintings of the French monarchy and bourgeoisie from before and after the French Revolution; Albert Oehlen; and the woods close to Oehlen.

 

Art Institute of Chicago

Highlights of the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago, the second-largest art museum in the US, including works by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists. The museum is renowned for its significant collection of 20th-century furniture, antique Asian art, and American, African-American, and Asian works of art. If you love Monet, don't miss this museum's journey through one of America's largest collections of his artwork.

Must-See Works of Art: The Art Institute's collection includes the well-known work "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat (see left). Numerous works by Monet, Manet, Cézanne, Renoir, and Cassatt are also included. Look for "American Gothic" by Grant Wood in the American Collection.

 

Detroit Institute Of The Arts

With 65,000 works on exhibit, the Detroit Institute of the Arts is one of the list's smallest museums but it still delivers a punch. The museum regularly ranks among the top 5 art museums to visit in the US and houses exceptional collections of Early European art paintings, American art, and ancient antiquities. If you are dying to see Rodin's "The Thinker" or catch a peek of Peter Bruegel the Elder's "The Wedding Dance," head straight for this museum.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

With an estimated 100,000 pieces of art stretching from antiquity to the present, the LACMA, as it is more commonly known, is the largest art museum west of Chicago. It is primarily recognised for its American galleries, which concentrate on art from Latin America and pre-Columbian cultures. The LACMA offers various temporary and permanent outdoor displays because of the consistently pleasant weather.

Must-See Works of Art: Michael Heizer's boulder sculpture "Levitated Mass" is the LACMA's newest star piece. Another well-known installation is Chris Burden's "Urban Light" (left).

 

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, located on Manhattan's Upper East Side in a remarkable Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structure, is well-known for its collection of contemporary art. The Guggenheim began with a collection of abstract and non-objective paintings from both America and Europe when it first opened in 1939 under the name The Museum of Non-Objective Painting. The Guggenheim, which was renamed after its creator in 1952, now exhibits its primary abstract collection with pieces from a variety of contemporary art genres, including Dada, Impressionism, Pop Art, and Surrealism.

 

Must-See Pieces of Art: Various pieces by Vasily Kandinsky, a painter to whom an entire gallery is devoted. Marc Chagall's "Paris Through the Window," the Robert Mapplethorpe Photography Collection, Amedeo Modigliani's "Nude," Édouard Manet's "Before the Mirror," Pablo Picasso's "Woman with Yellow Hair," etc.
